Course Overview
ENROLLMENT NOW OPEN for Spring 2024!
Ages 13-18
Meets Fridays 12:00-2:30
Students will develop advanced singing technique including but not limited to ear training, breathing, intonation, reading music, articulation, and rehearsal and performance skills. The course includes the study of music theory and history in the context of the 2, 3, and 4-part music that is chosen for each season. Challenging repertoire in English and other languages suitable for concert performance and choir competition with solo opportunities will be chosen. A high level of leadership and commitment to musical excellence is expected among singers.
Vocal Placement
After enrollment, a member of the SAAVA team will reach out to you to schedule a vocal placement.
Rehearsals
One 150-minute, weekly group rehearsal with individual rehearsals done by students at home during the subsequent week. Materials are provided. Rehearsals are Friday from 12:00 to 2:30PM. Rehearsal begins Friday, August 23 and ends with the final concert in May. Normal holiday schedules are honored.
Practice Policy
Students are expected to practice at home Monday-Thursday and attend ALL Friday rehearsals on campus. SAAVA directors reserve the right to dismiss choir members if they fail to practice the required repertoire. This is merely to make space for students who are committed to contributing to their vocal growth.
Attendance Policy
The high level of artistic excellence expected at SAAVA performances MANDATES regular attendance. Students are expected to arrive on time and attend all rehearsals, performances, and other events.
Make-up Rehearsal
Students who miss regular rehearsal on Friday must attend a make-up rehearsal the following Friday at 2:30pm (or schedule another time with their director).
Excessive Absences
After THREE absences, SAAVA staff will request a meeting with the singer and parent(s). The SAAVA director will request an individual vocal check with the singer to check on the singer’s musical preparation. At the discretion of SAAVA directors, the singer may be dismissed from the choir. Any singer who incurs two consecutive absences will also be asked to have a vocal check.
